The Veil Series
“We live in a time when science is validating what humans have known throughout the ages: that compassion is not a luxury; it is a necessity for our well-being, resilience, and survival.” ~Joan Halifax
Over the last few years, I have been taken with the notion of the veil, or shroud, as an image of the illusory nature of reality. In our daily life, we encounter an external impression of people, events, and things. Yet, much of our experience is based on a combination of conditions that include our unique perception and feeling life. The world we experience is, in reality, the very world we create, moment-by-moment through our own mental constructs and obscurations. Yet, more than ever, truth is increasingly difficult to discern in an age when much of our engagement with the world occurs online, and what we see is regulated by social media and biased algorithms. It is the layers and histories of our lives, some we draw upon and some we conceal, that I think makes us most interesting—each one of us an exquisite mystery. In this atmosphere, I am mindful of my own searching through obscured veils for what is true and real beneath the layers—and so it is what I strive to create with these artworks in The Veil Series.
